Founder of “the world's best internet radio station”, as awarded by The Online Radio awards in 2016, Adrian Meehan has used the voice of Soho Radio to reflect the vibrancy, and authenticity of Soho’s culture today.
We discussed the area of Soho as a hub of music, and how in the five years it’s graced the area, has developed from humble underground studio in Great Windmill Street, to receiving multiple media accolades, whilst still maintaining the familial environment its presenters praise it for.
When asked why Meehan, along with business partners Dan Gray and Finlay Morton, chose one of London’s most cultural areas to be the home of their station, he duly noted that “it kind of chose us”, and being a musician and lover of all things radio, the decision to start a radio show, as well as the location, couldn’t be any more appropriate. Drawing inspiration from US radio stations such as East Village Radio in New York, the store-front station began its shows “with a personal network of friends, and a great music community”. These collaborations would allow for a varied schedule of shows, enabling viewers to tune in to the amplification of what Soho is; more than just music, sex and rock ‘n’ roll, but also the theatre, comedy and history that bestows it.
To Adrian, Soho represents culture, individualism and creativity; “it’s a creative square mile, and everyone here is really into music”, describing music as the “soundtrack” and heartbeat of the area which features record stores and venues that have stood the test of time, in the ever-changing Soho area. Stores such as Sounds of the Universe, Phonica Records, and old Jazz favourite, Ronnie Scott’s (who have a regular show on Soho Radio) are still as prominent in the area as they were 15 years ago.
Fundamentally, Soho Radio is a cornerstone of the Soho community, its drive to enhance the local area, nurture its talent like Platform LDN, and give the area its voice is admirable, and all-in-all Adrian’s hope is that the station remains an integral part of Soho, where “everyone can come and learn new skills, develop their own skills, and we all learn off each-other”.
