Self taught cook and pioneering restauranteur Asma Khan has now opened her second restaurant in Carnaby following the success of Kingly Court's Darjeeling Express.
Calcutta Canteen serves food taking inspiration from Asma's North Indian and Bengali culture; holistic, nourishing and packed full of flavour. The delicious food can be enjoyed inside the restaurant or as a takeaway, making it the ideal place to run on your lunch break.
On the menu you will find Pau buns, stuffed with four fillings; vegan potato, cashew nut and curry leaves, vegitarian beetroot chop, masala omlette and beef mince. Asma has partnered with self-taught baker Tarunima Sinha of My Little Cake Tin for her choice of cakes. The colourful cakes celebrate her indian heritage with masala chai flavoured bundt cake, indian spiced shortbread cookies and pistachio biscuits.
You can also expect to try Asma's signiature Darjeeling Express Masala Chai and non-alcohol apple cider alongside tea from Asma's ancestral tea garden in India. The organic tea estate recently won a certificate protecting the habitat of local elephants and providing a safe passage for herds through the estate.
If that's not enough to convince you then watch for yourself as Asma is the upcoming star to Netflix's award winning show Chef's Table. Asma will host a community wall in the cafe where women can display seasonal food and condiments next to her new cook book Asma's Indian Kitchen.
