Located just off Carnaby Street in the continental-styled, beverage-focused Lowndes Court, Department of Coffee and Social Affairs is one of London’s finest coffee shops conveniently located in the heart of the West End.
Split over two levels, Department of Coffee and Social Affairs comprises a specialist Espresso Bar upstairs and a comprehensive Brew Bar downstairs. Using speciality coffees from a variety of specialist roasters, you can enjoy espresso-based drinks using the Coffeesmiths Espresso Blend or espresso or filter coffees made from coffee profiled in our Feature Coffee programme.
Tea and Baking
In addition to the coffee range, the shop also has a range of specialist teas and features a ever changing food range from some of London’s best bakers.
Department of Coffee and Social Affairs hosts a variety of Coffee School classes and is home to Brewing for Taste, where attendees learn how to make quality coffee at home using a variety of coffee-making methods. These popular classes sell out well in advance and bookings are essential.
The shop also retails a tightly curated range of coffee-making equipment from leading brands such as Hario, Espro and Rocket Espresso. You can also opt to purchase items from the Coffeesmiths online shop and conveniently collect them from Department of Coffee and Social Affairs.
As an organisation members of the team are both board members and volunteers for a number of national and international charities. These include the award-winning UK Charity Pump Aid which provides safe clean water to over 1.35 million of the poorest people in Sub-Saharan Africa. They work on a number of joint awareness and marketing campaigns to raise awareness and funding for Pump Aid.
Dept. of Coffee provide mentoring and administrational support to The Afri-CAN Charity. Their mission is to create, finance and mentor sustainable programs, NGOs and social ventures in Sub-Saharan Africa to alleviate poverty and hunger, to improve education, to provide skills training, and to provide employment. They focus on the poorest communities in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Afri-CAN Charity builds ECD pre-school nurseries and provides over 350,000 free school breakfasts annually for the most vulnerable children in the townships of South Africa. They have committed to providing 300,000 Free School Breakfasts over the next 3 years. They also sponsor the South African Hout Bay Barcelona Football Club based in Imizamo Yethu township, providing them with uniforms and equipment to 90 kids between the ages of 7 to 21 who are passionate about playing football.
Dept. of Coffee support the London-based charity Team Up, Team Up trains volunteer undergrad students to tutor disadvantaged children in private lessons in attaining essential GSCE’s. To date over 5,000 children in London have benefitted from the program. They provide Team Up’s 500 volunteers with a £100 prepaid gift card to be used in our shops as a ‘thank you’ for volunteering their time to help these disadvantaged students. In the UK the team also fund the Central London Rough Sleeper Committee events which are held every 2 weeks in Oxford Street providing hot meals and support to rough sleepers, where their staff are regular volunteers at these events.
